“All we need is a radio gaga, a radio goo-goo…”
Right before Sebastian was born, a crate of books was placed beside his crib, my bed, by the sofa. I stacked lullabies and classical music disks beside the CD players, and set my internet radio to the classics. Sebastian loved the books, hated the music. He would listen attentively as we read to him; he especially loved the Night You Were Born, the Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear-Brown Bear, and the parody book, Good Night Bush. But when we played Mozart, Chopin or Beethoven, he fussed. And we don’t even try to put on lullabies.
Over the past two years, he’s fallen asleep to Lady Gaga, Prince, Duran Duran, Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, and the Dixie Chicks. His favorite songs currently include: Boom Boom Pow, Alejandro, I like to move it move it, All the Single Ladies, Bebot, What do you want from me, and 99 Red Balloons. He can identify these songs from the first few bars.
Liza, I have to tell you that all 3 of my kids are fallen asleep with radio on from the moment I brought them from the hospital to my house. When they are sick and can’t sleep we are listening Delilah radio show, and they have soft rock and old music as my kids would say ( ’80 music is too old
)..but they love it and I really wouldn’t try to push them to listen to Mozart or Beethoven if they like more U2, Black Eyed Peas, Fergie or Miley Cyrus (my doughtier is the biggest fan)..so I thing that you doing wonderful job raising your boy with a music of his choose!
Sandra
Thanks, Sandra! I have a video of Sebastian dancing Boom Boom Pow. It’s hilarious.
love it! I need to try that trick with the babies in my care haha basin ako masisante! Can’t wait to see Sebastian!
First of all: I love that you quoted Queen (that song will probably be on repeat on my mental radio for the rest of the night, but that’s ok…yay for Bebot, too)
Second of all: i love that you have a child that can fall asleep to fun songs. I think that you’re setting him up for a happy sleeping future! My friend can only sleep in dead silence and will wake up with the slightest noise. i feel bad for her (and her kids!)
I loved sleeping to the bustle of activity, whether it’s my parents with their friends laughing well into the night, or the city noises of Brooklyn. i remember moving out to the more quiet and suburban Long Island, and literally being too scared to sleep because it was SO quiet! Probably what fueled my addiction to late night reading.
Only with the advent of the iPhone and Pandora radio have i appreciated sleeping to music (although, it’s more like I pass out with my ear buds in my ears while reading into the night).
Thanks for sharing!
